Origin and history
The church of Saint John Marchidial, located in Champeix in Puy-de-Dôme, finds its origins in the 12th century, when it was built as a castral chapel within the enclosure of the local castle. This first religious building was located in a site already built in the eighth century, where a summative earthworks had been built on the hill. The chapel, which became a parish church, served the community until the French Revolution in 1789, marking centuries of spiritual and social life.
Over the centuries, the Marchidal site experienced successive destruction and reconstruction, reflecting the historical tumults of the region. In the 18th century, major changes were undertaken, including the addition of a round tower on the northern facade, topped by a campanile. These changes illustrate the architectural and functional evolution of the building, which moved from a defensive and religious role to a more agricultural use after the Revolution, with spaces delimited by walls.
Since 1988, the association for the preservation of the Marchidial site has been working to preserve and enhance this heritage. Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, much of the rocky spur has been restored, transforming the gardens of the Marchidal into a recognized tourist site. Ranked a historic monument, the site now combines medieval history, architectural remains and landscape, offering a living testimony to the past of Champeix and its castle.
