Origin and history
The Church of Saint Joseph in Iracoubo is a Catholic religious building in the commune of the same name in French Guiana. Built in the 19th century, it is distinguished by its unique architecture and interior decor, entirely made by Pierre Huguet, a bagnard from the local camp. The frescoes, covering 400 m2, are marked by a naive style that gives them a remarkable artistic singularity.
Father Raffray, appointed in 1886, oversees this ambitious project. The building was classified as historic monuments on June 8, 1978, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Iracoubo and remains an exceptional testimony of the religious and prison history of Guyana.
The precise location of the church is indicated as 0 Rue Eugène Ronda Silva, in the department of Guyana (code INSEE 97303). Its classification covers the entire building, identified under the AB 21 cadastre. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as an emblematic monument of the region.
