Origin and history
The Saint-Julien d'Estavar church, located in the Catalan village of Estavar en Cerdagne (Pyrénées-Orientales), is a typical example of Romanesque mountain architecture. Dated from the 12th century, it consists of a single vaulted nave in a warhead cradle, a semi-circular bedside made of cut stone and a bell tower-wall. Its bedside, adorned with a frieze of gear teeth and carved modillons (visages, animals, fleurons), recalls that of the church Saint-Martin of Hix, although pierced by a single window. Access is via a granite southern portal, characteristic of Cerdan churches.
The building was first mentioned in the 10th century in the Act of Consecration of the Cathedral of the Seu d'Urgell, but its present structure dates back to the 12th century. Ranked a historical monument on 27 April 1931, the church illustrates Catalan Romanesque tradition: apse in assembled granite belloons, nave in schistose belloons, and cornice supported by carved crowlets. Its modest architecture reflects its role as a rural place of worship, adapted to the climatic and geographical constraints of Cerdagne.
Unlike nearby churches like Hix or Angustrine, Saint-Julien d'Estavar is distinguished by the sobriety of his plan and the quality of his sculptures. The frieze of the bedside, surmounted by a bevelled cornice, and the portal with three concentric granite arches testify to a local craftsmanship. The rest of the building, including the campanile, uses rough rubble, typical of the Romanesque constructions of this border region between France and Catalonia.
