Origin and history
The church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude, located in the commune of Saint-Julien-des-Chazes in Haute-Loire, is a Gothic building built in the 15th century. It was once a dependency of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre-des-Chazes, reflecting its religious and historical importance in the region. Its architecture, marked by a unique nave and a pentagonal apse, reflects the stylistic features of the late medieval era.
The church is home to a 12th century Virgin in majesty, classified as a historical monument. This polychrome wooden statue, 84 cm high, represents the Virgin sitting on a throne with the Child Jesus on her knees. It comes from the chapel of Sainte-Marie-des-Chazes and is a remarkable example of auvergnat Romanesque art. The building, with its arches crossed with warheads and its cloves carved with enigmatic faces, illustrates the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles.
The plan of the church, in the shape of a Latin cross, is accentuated by two lateral chapels opening onto the nave. A wooden stand occupies the western end of the building, adding a functional and aesthetic element. These architectural features, combined with its monastic history, make this church a major religious and cultural heritage of the Haute-Loire.
