Origin and history

The church of Saint-Julien of Saint-Julien-sur-Veyle, built in the 12th century, originally belonged to the snack of the Archbishop of Lyon. This Romanesque monument, typical of medieval religious architecture, is distinguished by its gate decorated with medallions depicting the evangelists and the paschal lamb, as well as its dome choir on trunks. Its history is marked by major transformations, especially in the 18th century after the partial collapse of its nave, then in the 19th century with the reconstruction of its bell tower.

In 1701, part of the west wall of the nave collapsed, resulting in repairs such as the repair of the tile roof and tile floor. The bell tower belfry and dome were restored in 1712. In the 19th century, radical changes took place: the bell tower was demolished and rebuilt in 1838 by the architect Desplace and the entrepreneur François Marvier, while the dome was covered in d'ardoise in 1880 under the direction of Anselme Rochet. These works reflect architectural developments and the preservation needs of the era.

The portal and choir, remarkable elements of the church, are classified as historical monuments on 8 June 1945. The portal, with its five medallions symbolizing the evangelists and the paschal lamb, and the choir, adorned with polychrome capitals and low arching, bear witness to the artistic richness of the twelfth century. Inside, the wood frame of the nave, supported by ravens, and the 19th century starry sky in the abside add to its unique character.

The main facade, in addition to its sculpted gate, features two open pilasters supporting a broken arch, one of which would represent the prophet Daniel in the lions' pit. A statue of the Virgin Mary, later added, overcomes the whole. These architectural details illustrate the stylistic evolution of the church, between Romanesque heritage and later additions.

The church Saint-Julien embodies both a preserved medieval heritage and a local history marked by successive adaptations. Its classification in 1945 underlines its historical and artistic importance, while anchoring the monument in the cultural landscape of the Ain and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
