Origin and history
The church of Saint-Julien, located in Autrac in Haute-Loire (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. It illustrates a composite architecture, marked by Gothic changes (addition of side chapels) and classic (square hatch on the transept and south porch). Its collected plan includes a short nave to a span, a cupola transept, and a semicircular apse decorated with carved modillons representing human figures, interlaces and grotesque characters.
Inside, the abside is rhythmized by five arcades falling over capitals with patterns of interlaces and figures. The steeple, rough and square, dominates the cross of the transept, with bays in the middle of the hanger probably reshaped. The building was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 30 January 1986, recognizing its heritage value, especially for its Romanesque decoration and its architectural evolution throughout the centuries.
Historical sources suggest an initial construction of the nave in the late 11th or early 12th century, followed by enlargements: a northern chapel may be added in the 13th century, two other chapels in the 15th century, and a porch in the modern era (XVI or 18th century). The sacristy dates back to the 19th century. These transformations reflect the liturgical and community needs of a rural parish over time.
The church Saint-Julien thus embodies local history, combining religious functions, architectural adaptations and artistic testimonies. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments highlights its role as an identity landmark for Autrac and its preserved Romanesque heritage in Haute-Loire.
