Origin and history
The church of Saint-Julien, located in La Chapelle-sur-Usson, is a historical monument whose oldest part is the Romanesque nave of the 12th century, vaulted in a cradle. This nave is accessible by a south gate, preceded by the Gothic period (15th century) by a vaulted porch of warheads. At the same time, a second nave was added to the north, with two arches of warheads resting on carved caps. This nave houses the funeral slab of the Morel de la Colombe family, testifying to the local importance of this family.
In the 17th century, a square bell tower was added west of the building and raised in 1864. The choir, with a flat bedside, was entirely rebuilt between 1884 and 1885. The church preserves traces of superimposed murals dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. These sets include a false Gothic apparatus, as well as characteristic 17th century motifs, such as patted crosses, a flower vase, and a frieze of roses and birds. These elements illustrate the artistic and architectural evolutions of the monument.
The church is attached to the 17th century castle and is integrated into the perimeter of the village, reflecting its central role in community life. It was fully listed as a Historic Monument by order of 2 July 2010. The successive changes, from Gothic additions to 19th century reconstructions, make it a rich testimony of local history, mixing religious, funeral and social functions.
