Origin and history

The church of Saint-Lambert de Montigny-sur-Meuse was built in 1765, during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Originally a simple oratory, it is dedicated to Saint Lambert in homage to Lambert of Maastricht. Its interior decoration in gypsy, as well as its furniture (master altar, pulpit, benches, eucharistic cabinet), date from the same period, reflecting the sober and functional style of the rural churches of the time.

Located in the department of Ardennes, south of the commune of Montigny-sur-Meuse, the church is located at the beginning of the rue du Rivage, near the Meuse. This geographical positioning illustrates its integration into the local landscape, between the road leading to Vireux-Molhain and Givet, and the river which has long structured the economic and social activities of the region.

Listed as historical monuments on March 15, 1993, the church of Saint-Lambert is recognized for its preserved architecture and furnishings. The protected elements include the stand, the gypsum decor and the apse baldaquin, which demonstrate the heritage importance of this building. The administration of the church is now the responsibility of the municipality, which ensures its preservation and its openness to the public.

The gypsum decor, characteristic of the building, is contemporary in its construction. This type of ornamentation, typical of the eighteenth century, highlights the modesty of the church while emphasizing its central role in the spiritual and community life of Montigny-sur-Meuse. Liturgical objects, such as the Custos or the Eucharistic cabinet, complete this coherent set, offering an overview of local piety and religious practices at that time.
