Origin and history

Église Saint-Laurent d'Aubenas, located in the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a religious building built over centuries: 15th, 18th and last quarter of the 19th century. It is distinguished by its sober neo-Romanesque facade, typical of the 19th century, which incorporates the aesthetic codes of Romanesque architecture without superfluous ornaments. The church is almost entirely enclaved in surrounding buildings, which gives it an unusual discretion for a monument of this importance, with a main entrance directly overlooking the street, without a court.

Inside, the atmosphere is marked by a characteristic darkness, due to the absence of side windows, illuminated only by high-rise stained glass windows. The choir houses dark wooden baroque stalls and altarpieces from the old chapel of the Jesuit college of Aubenas, destroyed in the early twentieth century. These elements, without gilding or stucco, add historical and artistic richness to the building. The delicate stands, running between the massive pillars, support a arch with a cross of warheads, creating a space for contemplation.

Saint Lawrence Church is open daily to the public, with free and free access. It was listed as historic monuments on 13 December 1977, recognizing its heritage value. Its precise location is the 23 Grand-Rue in Aubenas, in an area where dense urbanization has preserved its discreet but central integration into the old fabric of the city. The building belongs to the commune and reflects the architectural and religious evolution of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.

The main façade, although neo-Roman, contrasts with the baroque interior, illustrating the stylistic superpositions associated with the different periods of construction and renovation. The absence of gilding or ostentatious elements in retables reflects a sobriety characteristic of certain Jesuit achievements, while highlighting the quality of woodwork. The church, through its history and architecture, offers a tangible testimony to the urban and cultural transformations of Aubenas throughout the centuries.
