Origin and history
The church of Saint-Laurent, located in the municipality of Aubigny (Vendée, Pays de la Loire), is a religious building built in the 12th century. It embodies the Romanesque architecture of this period, although its nave was rebuilt at a later time, not specified in the available sources. The monument has been partially protected since 1926, with an inventory of historical monuments covering the church with the exception of its modern nave.
The location of the church at 4 Place de l'Eglise in Aubigny-Les Clouzeaux is attested by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates, although the accuracy of this location is considered fair (note of 5/10). Owned by the municipality, the building retains a central role in the local heritage landscape, although its access to the public (visits, events) is not documented in the sources consulted.
The Vendée department, marked by a rich medieval past, has many similar religious buildings in Saint-Laurent. These churches served as places of worship, but also as gathering points for rural communities. Their construction in the 12th century coincides with a period of parish development and land structure under the influence of local lords and the Church. No information is available on the sponsors or artisans who have worked on it.
