Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent church of Dieffenbach-au-Val, located in the Lower Rhine, has its origins in a reclusery founded around 1300 by the Comtal family of Werde. In 1369, Bishop Jean de Ligny converted this place into a priestly prebend, entrusting revenue and management to a clergyman named Bürkelin, under the authority of the Rector of Neuve-Église. The remains of this early chapel remain on the ground floor of the tower-choir, dated from the first half of the 14th century.

The lordship of Frankenburg, including Dieffenbach, passed under the control of the Grand Chapter of Strasbourg in 1489. This transition marked the beginning of architectural transformations: uplifting of the bell tower and drilling of new bays in the choir, probably in the late 15th or early 16th century. The present nave, of sober style, was built in 1699 to respond to the postwar population growth of Thirty Years, supplemented in 1701 by the creation of a vicariate.

In 1785, under the direction of parish priest François Joseph Karst (1725-1803), the nave was enlarged westward, incorporating a clean neoclassical facade. Ancient elements were re-used, such as a funeral cross of 1734 and sandstone benetiers. The structure reveals two phases of construction (1699 and 1785), while repairs were carried out in 1861 by architect Antoine Ringeisen. The building, inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 1986, preserves traces of its evolution, including a reamp damaged during the Second World War.

In the 20th century, works of enlargement (sacristy in 1957, baptismal chapel) and restoration (inward in 1957, exterior in 1985) modernized the church. The adjacent cemetery was extended and blessed in 1924. The ensemble, a communal property, illustrates the continuous adaptation of a place of worship to the needs of an Alsatian rural community, from its medieval origins to its heritage classification.
