Origin and history
The church of Saint-Laurent de Douchy is a religious monument located in the commune of Douchy, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Although its exact construction period is not specified, its 12th century Romanesque portal has been preserved and moved to Parc des Champs-Élysées de Saint-Quentin. This portal is the only known vestige of the ancient Romanesque church of Douchy, bearing witness to its medieval architecture.
The municipality of Douchy, classified as a rural with scattered habitat, is marked by a predominantly agricultural land use (90.9% in 2018). It is part of the area of attraction of Saint Quentin and the community of communes of the Pays du Vermandois. The territory, without rivers, is characterized by a degraded oceanic climate, typical of the plains of northern France.
The archives mention the name Douchy in various historical forms, such as Doucis (1163) or Doulchy (1587), reflecting its linguistic evolution over the centuries. No additional information is available on the other architectural elements of the church or on its detailed history, except the exceptional preservation of its Romanesque portal, which is now exhibited in a nearby public park.
