Origin and history
Saint-Laurent de Falaise Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Falaise, in the department of Calvados in Normandy. Dating mainly from the 12th and 16th centuries, it presents an architecture combining Romanesque and Gothic elements. The nave dates back to the second half of the 11th century, while the choir was built in the early 13th century. A northern chapel was added in the 14th century, and drills and a second northern chapel were built after 1834. Originally, the church was dedicated to St Peter and St Lawrence, before being dedicated only to St Lawrence.
St. Lawrence Church has been listed as historic monuments since 18 March 1927. It once belonged to the ancient diocese of Sées, and its patronage was ensured by the chapter of Sées. Today, it is owned by the municipality of Falaise. The building is located north of the agglomeration at Address 3 Route de Versainville, and its conservation status is considered satisfactory based on available assessments.
Historical sources mention the church in works such as the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont, published in 1850. The latter describes the building as a notable example of the architectural and religious heritage of the region. The church is also referenced in official databases such as Mérimée, under the code Insee 14258, confirming its membership in the Calvados department and the Normandy region.
