Origin and history

Saint-Laurent de Forges Church is a religious building located in the commune of Forges, now integrated in Doué-en-Anjou, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. Its construction spans several centuries, with elements dating from the 12th century, additions of the 16th century (such as the foothills of the bell tower and a south door), and interior arrangements of the 18th and 19th centuries. These transformations reflect the evolution of the liturgical and architectural needs of the local community over nearly 800 years.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of December 5, 1973, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Significant changes include the condemnation of a south gate in the 19th century and the piercing of a new entrance to the west. These changes illustrate the successive adaptations of the building, while maintaining traces of its medieval origin. The church remains today a witness to the religious and architectural history of Anjou.

The location of the church, at the approximate address of 4 Rue de la Mairie in Forges, makes it a central point of the village. Like many rural churches, it has probably served as a place of community gathering, worship and sometimes as a welcome for travellers or pilgrims. Its inscription in the Fondation Mérimée et Clochers de France underlines its importance in the regional heritage of the Pays de la Loire.
