Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent church of La Baroche-Gondouin, located in Lassay-les-Châteaux in Mayenne, was built in 1868 to replace an earlier building threatened with ruin. In Romanesque style, its design is attributed to the architect Godin de Lassay. This monument preserves the tombstones of Jean Margerie and his wife, Catherine de la Chapelle-Rainsouin, testimonies of a local funeral heritage.

The church inventory, made on 10 March 1906, was conducted in a tense climate, marked by the indignation of a crowd that the gendarmes had difficulty containing. This episode reflects the social tensions of the time around policies of secularization and protection of religious heritage.
