Arcisse de Caumont - Historian and archaeologist Documented the church in 1857.

Origin and history

Saint-Laurent Church is a Roman Catholic church today in ruins, located in the Calvados department, more precisely in the village of Marigny, a former integrated commune in Longus-sur-Mer in 1861. Dating from the 15th century, it bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of the region, although little remains today.

The cemetery door attached to this church is the only remarkable vestige still visible. This architectural element was inscribed as historical monuments on October 22, 1926, emphasizing its heritage importance despite the state of degradation of the rest of the building.

Historical sources mention the church in works such as the Monumental Statistics of Calvados (1857) of Arcisse de Caumont, which describes its characteristics. This document, among others, allows to situate the monument in the wider context of Norman religious heritage, marked by similar constructions at the same time.

Today, the St. Lawrence Church is no longer an active place of worship, but its history and its classified door make it a point of interest for the study of Christian architecture and the evolution of rural towns in Lower Normandy. Its state of ruins also recalls the challenges of preserving heritage in the face of time and territorial transformation.
