Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent church of Nogent-sur-Seine, located in the Aube department in the Grand East region, is a Catholic building built mainly in the sixteenth century, with elements dating from the 15th century. It was erected on a rectangular plane with a five-sided apse, and its five-span nave began in 1500. The church was initially a parish under the dean of Pont-sur-Seine, before being raised to second-class care in 1802.

The church temporarily sheltered the ashes of Héloïse and Abélard in 1792, after their transfer from the Paraclete, before they were sent to Paris in 1800, then to the cemetery of the Père-Lachaise in 1817. It is decorated with sculptures by Ramus, Paul Dubois and Alfred Boucher, and houses a 15th century statue of Virgin with Child as well as numerous paintings. Its organ and tower, admired by Louis XIV, make it a remarkable monument.

Classified as historical monuments in 1908, the church also retains a chapel dedicated to Saint Syre, raised by the Pougoise family and used by the Angenoust family. In 2018, new stained glass windows designed by Flavie Vincent-Petit and Fabienne Verdier were installed. A cemetery, formerly attached to the building, housed a chapel called Petit-Saint-Laurent, built in 1597 and demolished in 1735.
