Origin and history

The church of Saint-Laurent de Rieux, located in the village of the same name in Marne (Great East), is an emblematic monument of medieval religious architecture. Its construction began in the early 13th century (between 1200 and 1225), illustrating the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. The carpented nave preserves Romanesque features, while the lower side and the choir, dated from the 15th century, reflect the evolution towards the Champagne gothic, known for its technical advance compared to neighbouring regions such as Burgundy or Île-de-France.

The building is distinguished by its imposing bell tower with a slender vestibule and a belfry illuminated by narrow windows on each side. Its courtyards, exterior galleries surrounding the sanctuary, and its snout windows in the apse are rare architectural elements. Inside, carved benches from the 15th century bear witness to the craftsmanship of the time. Ranked a historical monument in 1862, the church once depended on the diocese of Troyes, emphasizing its historical and religious importance.

According to Viollet-le-Duc, this church embodies a completed example of Champagne Gothic architecture, marked by a sober ornamentation but a bold structure. Its state of conservation and its peculiarities (like carved benches) make it a heritage studied, notably by local historians such as Pierre Heliot in the 1960s. Today, it remains a symbol of the Marnais rural heritage, managed by the commune of Rieux.
