Origin and history

The church of Saint-Laurent de Roujan, located in the Hérault region of Occitanie, is a religious building whose construction took place mainly between the late 13th and 14th centuries. It features a characteristic Gothic architecture, with a unique nave of four arched bays of warheads, followed by a tripartite bedside composed of an apse and two pentagonal apsidioles. The square bell tower, adjacent to the south wall, and the walled western gate (replaced by a side entrance in the eighteenth century) bear witness to the evolution of the building over the centuries. Interior arrangements, such as the communion grid or baptismal fonts, date mostly from the 18th century, while lateral chapels were added in the 19th century.

The history of the church is marked by its attachment to the priory of Cassan from the twelfth century. In 1115 the bishop of Béziers donated it to this monastic institution, before Raymond, Sieur de Vailhan, confirmed this attribution. Usured during the Albigeese war, it was returned to Cassan in 1211. Gothic reconstruction began in the middle of the 13th century, beginning with the bedside, before a visible interruption after the last span of the nave. The work probably resumed at the end of the 13th or early 14th century. The building, decorated with a refined monumental sculpture, illustrates the artistic evolution of this period, between Romanesque tradition and Gothic innovations.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 1954, the St. Lawrence Church retains remarkable elements such as head-carved caps, human-figured modillons, and narrow windows in broken lancets or in the middle of the hangar. The bedside, shallow but complex, multiplies the panels of openwork walls, while the nave incorporates foothills decorated with modillons. In the 18th century, major changes were made: walling of the western gate (1759-1762), opening of a new entrance to the south, and construction of the sacristy (1786). A northern lateral chapel, described as "modern" in the sources, completes the whole, reflecting liturgical and community adaptations over time.
