Origin and history
The Saint-Laurent church of Bourget-du-Lac is an ancient Priorial church linked to the Clunisian Priory Saint-Maurice. Founded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks of Cluny, it preserves a Romanesque crypt of this period. The building was rebuilt in the 13th century, then restored in the 15th century with its convent buildings. These transformations reflect its religious and architectural importance in the Savoyard region.
In 1582, the priory was attached to the Jesuits, before moving to the Franciscans in 1773. At the end of the 19th century, it was acquired by an amateur of art who began its restoration, taken over in 1912 by the Duchess of Choiseul. It creates a French-style garden and continues to preserve the site. Ranked a historic monument in 1900, the church and its crypt bear witness to this rich monastic and artistic past.
The building, owned by the commune of Bourget-du-Lac, now embodies a major medieval and religious heritage in Savoie. Its architecture, marked by the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods, as well as its history linked to monastic orders, make it an emblematic site of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Recent studies, such as those of Axelle Janiak, highlight its liturgical layout between the 13th and 15th centuries.
