Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent Church, located in Illats en Gironde (New Aquitaine), is a religious building built from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. It stands on an ancient Merovingian site (VI-VIIth century), as attested to archaeological excavations of 2007 having revealed burials. The original sanctuary, dedicated to Saint Laurent, was erected at the edge of the 11th and 12th centuries, followed by the nave and Romanesque portal at the hinge of the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 16th century, the arms of the transept and the side chapels were added in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

The church is closely linked to the pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, being located on the Lou Laussat road. His second patron saint, Saint Roch, is represented as a pilgrim on a stained glass window in the abside. The western gate, classified as a Historical Monument in 1925, is distinguished by its five carved rolls and capitals decorated with interlaces, human heads and fantastic animals. The interior preserves eight Romanesque capitals, including four of the 11th-XIIth centuries depicting scenes such as the Last Judgment and the Martyr of St. Lawrence, as well as 19th-century stained glass windows signed by Louis-Victor Gesta.

The church was entirely classified in 1986 and is home to remarkable furniture: an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece, a 15th-century ivory Christ, and three historic bells (1756, 1890, 2000). His cemetery, transferred in 1830, was once interesting to the building. Nearby, an 18th century cross of crossroads and a medieval pillar marked the parish boundaries, while a Saint-Roch chapel, now extinct, witnessed local devotion.

The architecture mixes a unique dogive vaulted nave, apse in hemicycle, and asymmetric transept. The additions of the 19th and 20th centuries (street, stained glass, furniture) complete this ensemble, reflecting its evolution over the centuries. The church remains a major testimony of the girondin religious heritage, associated with both compostellan pilgrimages and local history.

The protected elements include the gate (1925) and the entire building (1986). Its state of conservation and its successive restorations make it possible to appreciate a heritage at once Romanesque, Gothic and classical, marked by regional influences and varied craftsmanship, from medieval sculptors to Toulouse master glassmakers.
