Origin and history

The church of Saint-Laurent des Villards-sur-Thônes is a Catholic religious building built between 1700 and 1702, following a decision taken in 1699 to entrust its realization to local masons. The parish, created in the seventeenth century, bears witness to the importance of this place of worship for the village community. The building was originally built in a sober style, typical of the Savoyard rural churches of the time.

In 1794, the church bell tower was destroyed and two of its bells carried away, an episode related to the revolutionary unrest that marked the region. It was not until 1814 that the bell tower was rebuilt, thus restoring the emblematic silhouette of the building. These events illustrate the political and religious upheavals that affected Savoy at that time.

The church underwent several changes during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1844, it was enlarged to meet the needs of a growing population. Later, in 1935, a heating system was installed there, improving the comfort of the faithful. Finally, in 1996, restoration work was undertaken to repair the cracks caused by an earthquake, highlighting the vulnerability of the heritage to natural hazards.
