Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Léger d'Orvault, located in the Loire-Atlantique department, is a Roman Catholic building in the Gothic Revival style. It is the fourth church built on this site, replacing earlier buildings, the first of which dates back to the eighth century, founded by the disciples of Saint Hermeland. The present church, built between 1898 and 1901, replaces a 19th century building deemed too small and old. It was designed by architect François Bougoüin, with sculptures by Joseph Vallet.

Construction of the present church began in 1898 on the site of an old vegetable garden, at the initiative of Canon Jean Richeux. The first stone was blessed on 26 Dec. 1898, and the building was completed in 1901, although it had no bell tower and stained glass on that date. The bell tower was finally built in 1935, and the windows of the nave and transepts were installed in 2017, thus completing the building. The bells, melted in 1935 by the foundry Paccard d'Annecy, bear the names of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, Léger, Jeanne-d'Arc and Thérèse de l'Enfant-Jésus.

The interior of the church is marked by a neo-Gothic style, with three naves separated by columns and vaults decorated with carved keys. The stained glass windows of the choir, restored in 2016, tell the story of Saint Léger, bishop of Autun and patron saint of the parish. In 2017, contemporary stained glass windows were installed in the nave and transepts, representing an aerial view of Orvault. The furniture includes a white marble master altar (1903), a pulpit acquired in 1909, and an organ installed in 2018.

The church of Saint-Léger had several notable parish priests, including Julien Lemarié (1802-1840), who supervised the construction of the third church, and Jean Richeux (1870-1902), at the origin of the current building. Today it belongs to the parish Blessed-Célestin-et-Michel-en-Val-de-Cens, founded in 2022, and is part of the diocese of Nantes. Its architecture and history reflect the religious and cultural evolution of the region.

Recent works, such as the renovation of the bell tower in 2018 and the installation of a new organ, testify to the continuous maintenance of this heritage. The church remains an active place of worship and a historical symbol for the commune of Orvault, incorporating ancient and contemporary elements in its architecture and decoration.
