Origin and history

The church Saint-Léger de Fertans is a religious monument located in the commune of Fertans, in the Doubs department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It is attached to the parish of Amancey, itself dependent on the diocese of Besançon. This place of worship, though modest in size, has a marked heritage interest, thanks to its historic furniture.

The building was listed as historic monuments on 21 June 1988. This protection concerns the church as a whole, while several of its movable elements are classified as historical objects. Among these elements are funerary slabs from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as statues and a pulpit to be preached from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. These objects demonstrate the historic and artistic significance of the site.

The church houses two remarkable funeral slabs: that of Beatrix de la Palud-Varambon, who died in 1521, and that of Henri de Scey, lord of Fertans, who died in 1544. These two slabs, classified in 1908, illustrate the link between the monument and local history, especially with the regional nobility. Other elements, such as a 17th-century statue of Saint-Léger or an 18th-century cross Christ, complete this movable heritage.

The location of the church at 6 Church Square in Fertans is specified in heritage databases such as Merimée. The monument, owned by the commune, remains an active place of worship while being an architectural and historical testimony of the region. Its inscription and classification of its movable objects underline its role in preserving the religious and funeral heritage of Franche-Comté.
