Origin and history

The church of Saint-Léger de Jagny-sous-Bois, located in Val-d'Oise, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the thirteenth century, as evidenced by its bell tower. Originally dedicated to Saint Barthélemy, it was partially rebuilt in the 16th century under the impulse of the local lord, who financed a Gothic-style choir flamboyant with interior Renaissance decorations. The nave, which was later built (17th or 18th century) in low-quality bellows, quickly suffered from problems of stability, requiring repairs as early as 1856-1858, without lasting success.

In the 20th century, the nave, considered irreparable, was demolished in 1955 after the collapse of its structure, leaving only the choir, the collaterals and the bell tower of the 13th century. Ranked a historic monument in 1980, the church was the object of complex restoration campaigns, especially between 2005 and 2013, to save the choir threatened with ruin. Its interior, marked by the transition between flamboyant gothic and Renaissance, is distinguished by arches with prismatic veins, Corinthian capitals and dais carved in the abside, inspired by the artisans who worked at the nearby Écouen castle.

The centrepiece of the building is a unique Renaissance décor, including foliage-enclosed lamp-butts and carved arch keys, such as a fruit cluster surrounded by volutes. The lower side, more sober, preserve traces of successive changes, while the furniture includes classified statues, including a 15th century Christ of pity and a 16th century Virgin of Pain. Despite the loss of its nave, the church remains a rare testimony of the religious architecture of the first Renaissance in Île-de-France, mixing medieval heritage and stylistic innovations.

The bell tower, probably the oldest vestige (thirteenth century), is characterized by its simplicity, with inclined foothills and bays in the middle of the hanger without ornamentation. Outside, the choir's bedside contrasts with its neat cut stone performance, Renaissance reamping bays and ground glazes. The building, now free from any adjacent construction, offers a clear reading of its various phases of construction, although its history is marked by periods of decline and rescue in extremis, as evidenced by the iron bands belting the abside to ensure its stability.

On the parish level, Jagny-sous-Bois formerly depended on the diocese of Paris, before being attached to the diocese of Versailles after the Revolution, then to Pontoise in 1966. Today integrated into the "parity of the eleven bell towers" of Luzarches, the church of Saint-Léger welcomes more than occasional Masses, but its classification and recent restoration (completed in 2014) make it a preserved heritage, open to the visit and symbol of local history.
