Origin and history

Saint-Léger de Montfermy Church is a Catholic building located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Built in the 12th century to replace a legendary oratory attributed to Saint Brachion, it has been profoundly redesigned over the centuries. His frescoes, probably dating from the early 14th century, were rediscovered during restorations in the 1980s. They illustrate a scene of reconstruction of a Romanesque church, evoking an earthquake that destroyed the castle and the early church.

The church architecture consists of a unique nave, three apsidioles forming the choir and transept, and a modest bell tower (21 m long, 5 m wide). The sanctuary houses twelve life-size apostles and scenes historiated in superimposed registers, surmounted by angels. These murals, classified as a historical monument since 1908, bear witness to medieval religious art. A supplementary inscription in 2022 extended the protection to the entire building.

According to local legend, the original oratory was founded by Saint Brachion, a figure associated with the evangelization of the Auvergne. The 14th century frescoes, with their architectural decoration and iconography, suggest an active Christian community, marked by natural events such as the earthquake represented. The church, owned by the commune, remains a major witness to the religious heritage of Auvergnat.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical and artistic importance. The paintings were the subject of an in-depth study by Yves Morvan in 1986, published in the Auvergne Historical and Scientific Bulletin. Their state of conservation and style provide valuable insight into the artistic and devout practices of the time.
