Origin and history

The Saint-Léger church of Saint-Léger-de-Rôtes is a building of medieval origin, whose oldest remains are today limited to the base of the walls. This monument underwent a major transformation between 1845 and 1879, then adopting a neo-Gothic style that profoundly marked its present appearance. The reconstruction of 1879 erased much of the medieval structure, leaving only discreet traces of its past.

The adjacent cemetery cross, dating from the 18th century, is an important heritage element of the site. It bears witness to a period prior to the major works of the 19th century and adds a historical dimension complementary to the whole. The interior of the church is distinguished by a particularly rich decoration, reflecting the artistic and religious tastes of the period of its renovation. The building, including the cross, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 23 March 1993.
