Origin and history

The church of Saint-Léger de Saint-Maixent-l'École found its origins in the seventh century, when the bishop of Poitiers, Dido, installed his nephew Léger there as abbot of the monastery dedicated to Saint Saturnin. Léger, who became bishop of Autun in 662, was killed around 678-679 by order of Ébroin, mayor of the Neustrie Palace. His relics, transferred to the abbey in 681, were placed in a dedicated crypt, inaugurated in 684 under Abbé Audulfe. This crypt, which was filled in the 17th to 18th centuries, was rediscovered in 1875 by archivist Alfred Richard, revealing a building potentially dating back to the 9th to 11th centuries.

In the 15th century, the church was partially rebuilt, keeping only a north side with chapel and medieval crypt. She became parishioner and later Protestant temple after the Revolution, and underwent major demolitions. The crypt, classified as a historic monument in 1879, was the subject of a controversial restoration between 1883 and 1885, partially altering its authenticity. Today, this crypt and a gothic chapel remain mainly witness to its turbulent history.

The site is linked to major figures from the early Middle Ages, such as Saint Léger, whose cult developed after its canonization in 681. The church also illustrates the local religious transformations, from Catholicism to Protestantism, and the heritage stakes of the 19th and 20th centuries, between archaeological rediscovery and sometimes questionable interventions. Its early ranking (1879) underscores its historical and architectural importance in the Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine.
