Origin and history

The church of Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles de Chennevières-lès-Louvres replaces an old church dedicated to Saint Médard, razed in the early eighteenth century. Founded in the 14th century by Gilles Choisel, local lord, she adopted Saint Gilles as patron, reflecting her relationship with the seigneury. The Renaissance choir, built in the 16th century, was completed in 1577 and is distinguished by its elegance and statue niches, while the Gothic nave, more modest, underwent transformations in the 17th and 19th centuries.

The current bell tower, built in 1719 after the collapse of a medieval tower, also serves as a porch. The nave, initially devoid of sidelines, is equipped with it during this reconstruction. The 19th century restorations, particularly in 1865, were designed to repair the revolutionary damage and refurbish the building. Ranked a historic monument in 1980, the church retains remarkable furniture, including a 14th century Virgin with Child and a altarpiece of 1755.

The choir, Renaissance masterpiece, contrasts with the nave by its height (11.75 m against 7.10 m) and its brightness. Its vaults, decorated with roses and carved niches, house statues of the patron saints, Leu and Gilles. The lateral chapels, dedicated to the Virgin and the saints, complete this harmonious liturgical ensemble. It is surrounded by architectural dais, which illustrates the influence of ancient models revisited by local artisans.

The church, located on the central square of the village, is surrounded by a wooded parvis and a lawn, although its proximity to traffic routes poses challenges of preservation. Its history reflects the religious and social evolutions of the region, from its role as mother parish in the Middle Ages to its integration into the diocese of Pontoise in 1966. Today, it remains an active place of worship, despite a reduced frequency of mass.

The classified furniture, including statues, a retable, and funerary slabs, bears witness to the artistic and historical richness of the site. Among the notable pieces are a 16th century beam of glory, a bas-relief of the Crucifixion, and a commemorative plaque by Pierre Guérin, 17th century tax attorney. These elements, combined with composite architecture, make the church an emblematic heritage of Val-d'Oise.
