Origin and history
Saint-Lizier de Balacet Church is a Catholic church located in the Ariège department in the Occitan region. It is located on the solane du Biros, 903 meters above sea level, near the departmental road 704 between Balacet and Uchentein. Its architecture, renovated in a 12th century Romanesque style, includes a tower tower and a round apse, characteristic of the churches of this period.
The chrism carved above the front door, dating from the 12th century, is classified as historical monuments. Inside, several objects are protected: two 18th century candlesticks, a 13th century pyxid, as well as a high altar, a altarpiece and an 18th century tabernacle. A statue of the Virgin Mary and a procession lantern of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are also listed.
The church also houses a monument to the deaths of the First World War, accompanied by a commemorative plaque, a monumental painting and a mosaic under the porch. These elements are inscribed in the Palissy base, highlighting the heritage importance of the site.
The adjoining cemetery and mountain location add to its historical and cultural character. The building illustrates the religious and architectural heritage of the region, marked by Romanesque influences and a rich local history.
The presence of these listed or listed elements reflects the artistic and historical value of the church, while reflecting the religious and commemorative practices of the community over the centuries.
Balacet, like other villages in the Ariegean Pyrenees, has seen its church play a central role in social and spiritual life, especially through liturgical objects and commemorations held on site.
