Origin and history

The church Saint-Louis de La Cour-Marigny found its origins in a dependent territory from the ninth century of the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, serving as a refuge for monks fleeing Norman invasions in 833. This early monastic link explains the subsequent establishment of a place of worship on this site. The present building was built at the beginning of the 12th century, adopting a simple plan: a single vessel extended by a square choir with flat bedside, characteristic of the small rural churches of the time.

In the 13th century, the choir was probably reshuffled, while in 1525 a frame bell tower was added, supported by double wooden poles resting on stone dice. These changes reflect the evolving liturgical and structural needs of the community. In the 19th century, a plaster vault was installed, replaced in 1983 by a panel, revealing 15th-century wall paintings on the bedside. These frescoes, organized in juxtaposed scenes, represent groups of men encapsulated, harvesters, and a horseman surrounded by characters in an architectural setting, testifying to medieval religious and social life.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 11 April 1994, the church now belongs to the commune of La Cour-Marigny. Its flat bedside, rare in the region, and painted decorations make it a remarkable example of the religious heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire, combining Romanesque simplicity and late Gothic enrichments. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), and its official address is 1 Place de l'Eglise, 45260 La Cour-Marigny.
