Origin and history
The church Saint-Louis-de-Montfort de Saint-Herblain is located in the Nantes agglomeration, in the Loire-Atlantique, on the north-east limit of the commune, close to the Breil-Barberie district. It belongs to the parish of Saint-Luc-Saint-Louis-de-Montfort, shared between Saint-Herblain and Nantes. His name pays tribute to Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a missionary who began his ministry at Nantes in the Saint-Clément community.
The building was inaugurated and blessed on 26 April 1957 by the Bishop of Nantes, Jean Villepelet. Four years later, in 1961, parish halls were added. In 2001, the choir was renovated to improve acoustics and thermal atmosphere. Since 1987, the parish has maintained a twinning with Bethlehem, supporting Palestinian children in their schooling through the association Avenir Jeunes Bethlehem.
Designed by the architect Georges Ganuchaud, the church combines modernity and tradition, with a frame evoking a boat hull topped by red tiles. Its triangular bell tower and its stained glass façade make it a visual landmark. Ganuchaud, known for his work on the Sillon de Bretagne, has a distinctive architectural identity, between Christian heritage and contemporary audacity.
