Origin and history

The church of Saint-Loup de Cepoy, located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 11th century and the first half of the 12th century. It was thoroughly renovated and modified in 1894, when architectural elements such as the geminous bays above the chapels were added or transformed. His plan follows a classic novel model, with a nave flanked by bottoms, a choir extended by a semicircular apse, and a square bell tower with a roof in the pavilion.

The church has been listed as a historical monument since 29 December 1981. It was once home to a Benedictine priory dependent on the abbey of the Chaise-Dieu, then that of Saint-Jean-de-Sens after 1563, although no vestige of this priory remains today. Inside, two 17th-century polychrome wooden statues representing Saint Roch and Saint Loup have been classified as Historic Monuments as objects since 2001.

On the ecclesiastical level, the church falls under the Diocese of Orleans, in the province of Tours, and is part of the parish group of Châlette-sur-Loing - Cepoy. Its architecture, marked by Romanesque influences and 19th century restorations, reflects the stylistic and religious evolutions of the Gâtinais region, where it is located in the heart of the commune, near the Loing.

The 1894 amendments included the interior of the building, as well as some bell tower bays, where central columns were replaced by pilasters. This work, typical of the eclectic restorations of the period, aimed to modernize or reinterpret the original Romanesque style, while preserving the general structure of the church.
