Origin and history

The Saint-Loup de Chappes Church is a historic monument located in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. It is located in the town of Chappes, near the Seine and about ten kilometers southwest of Troyes. The building, which has been classified since 1840, combines architectural elements of the 12th and 16th centuries, including its collaterals and its apse with five sections.

The parish of Chappes, dedicated to Saint Loup, historically belonged to the great dean of Troyes and was placed under the responsibility of the Abbé de Montiéramey. The church was mentioned as early as 1117 in ecclesiastical archives. Inside, it houses 15th-century statues, including a painted Virgin with Child limestone and a polychrome limestone statue, as well as paintings on the 18th-century nave ceiling.

The interior furniture and decorations reflect varied artistic influences, with elements such as the arms of the Dukes of Aumont and an 18th century funeral liter. These details reflect the historical and religious significance of the building in the region, as well as its architectural and artistic evolution over the centuries.
