Origin and history

The church of Saint-Loup de Marsalès, located in the eponymous village of New Aquitaine, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 12th century, with major changes in the 17th century. It was historically dependent on the Archpried of Capdrot, to which it was attached by a pontifical bubble in 1317. Its plan includes a unique nave of a single span, extended by a choir in the hemicycle, typical of Romanesque architecture. The nave, initially vaulted, was later equipped with a ceiling panel, while the north wall was pierced in the seventeenth century to add a side chapel.

In the 17th century, significant changes were made, including the addition of a full arch opening onto the northern chapel, supported by ground impostes. The west facade, rebuilt at that time, hosts a characteristic bell tower-wall, decorated with two campanary bays and marked by curves and countercurves. Leabside, sober, keeps a bench of stone belting its round, underlined by a cornice marking the birth of the vault in cul-de-four. On the south side, remains of an ancient Romanesque portal remain, reflecting the transformations that the building has undergone.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments since 1974, the Saint-Loup church is now part of the communal property. Its inscription in the inventory protects in particular its structure (nave, choir, side chapel) and its bell tower-wall, emblematic elements of its architectural heritage. The location of Marsalès, in ancient Aquitaine, and its history linked to the Archpriested of Capdrot make it a witness to medieval and modern religious and territorial dynamics.
