Origin and history
The Saint-Loup church of Saint-Loup is a Catholic building of the first third of the 12th century, located in the village of Saint-Loup, in the department of Manche, in Normandy. It is built in granite and is distinguished by its ridge vault, its triumphal arch, and its doubles in the middle of the choir, as well as its western gate and tower bays. It is the best preserved of a group of Romanesque churches in Avranchin, keeping its original plan with a single rectangular nave and a two-span choir finished with a hemicycle.
The church presents specific architectural elements, such as a similar profile for the western gate, the south gate and the tower bays, as well as sculpted baskets and bases. Under the cornice of the choir, carved modillons of grotesque characters and human figures are visible. The only notable modification is the opening of a side chapel in the second span of the choir, north side, in 1602.
The church houses remarkable furniture from the late 17th century, several elements of which are classified as objects of historical monuments: secondary altars, retables, 16th century baptismal fonts, 16th century Pietà, paintings, glass windows and statues. The building itself, with the exception of the sacristy and the northern chapel, is classified as historical monuments by order of 25 April 1921.
