Origin and history
The church of Saint-Loup-de-Sens, located at La Croix-en-Brie in Seine-et-Marne, is a religious building built in the 13th century. It was radically redesigned in the 15th and 16th centuries, reflecting the architectural and religious evolutions of these periods. The building, now listed as historical monuments since 1963, preserves traces of its medieval and modern history, marked by successive transformations.
Originally, this church belonged to the religious of Charity-sur-Loire, before being ceded in 1208 by Prior Godefroy, brother of Hervé IV of Donzy, to the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. They founded La Croix-en-Brie, a religious and military establishment that played an important role in the region. This transition marked a turning point in the history of the place, closely linking it to the hospital order.
The church of Saint-Loup-de-Sens illustrates the influence of religious orders in the planning of the French territory in the Middle Ages. Its location in Île-de-France, a region marked by a strong ecclesiastical and seigneurial presence, made it a witness to the political and spiritual dynamics of the time. The reshuffles of the 15th and 16th centuries may reflect liturgical adaptations or defensive needs, although the sources do not specify the exact motivations of this work.
