Origin and history

The Saint-Maclou church, located in Rouen, Normandy, is dedicated to Maclou, one of the seven founding saints of mainland Brittany who lived between the 6th and 7th centuries. His name evokes this spiritual connection with the Breton tradition, while abiding in the Norman landscape.

Construction of the current building began in 1436, after the collapse of the nave of a previous church at the beginning of the 15th century, due to a lack of maintenance. The works, financed by parishioners and encouraged by indulgences granted by Archbishop Hugues des Orges, spread until the middle of the 16th century. Architects Pierre Robin, Oudin de Mantes, Simon le Noir, Ambroise Harel and Pierre Gringore succeed each other in erecting this flamboyant Gothic masterpiece. The church was consecrated in 1481 by Georges II of Amboise, although the bell tower was only completed later.

The history of Saint-Maclou is marked by destruction and rebirth. In 1562, the Protestants destroyed it, and it was closed during the Revolution in 1793. Its arrow, damaged by weather in the seventeenth century, was rebuilt between 1868 and 1871. During World War II, in 1944, two bombs caused the partial collapse of the vaults and a fire, requiring major restoration. The choir was restored in 2000, and the tower was reinvigorated in 2007, thanks to a €7 million heritage plan.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the church illustrates Norman flamboyant Gothic architecture, with a western façade decorated with a rosette and a five-bay porch. Its interior, designed to maximize light, houses 15th century stained glass windows, such as the Tree of Jesse, and a Renaissance organ with a buffet carved by Nicolas Castille. Despite the loss of ancient stained glass windows and baroque woodwork during the war, it retained an 18th-century glory beam.

The archives of the factory, preserved at the departmental archives of Seine-Maritime (cartulars G6872 and G6873), testify to the financial mobilization of parishioners as early as 1333. These documents bring together donations, wills, and letters of indulgence, revealing the importance of the church in the life of the community of Rouenne. Today, Saint-Maclou remains a symbol of resilience and religious heritage in Normandy.
