Origin and history
The church Saint-Marcel de Molosmes, located in the Yonne in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is originally the abbey of the monastery Saint-Pierre, founded in the 6th century. The present building, rebuilt in the 4th quarter of the 15th century and completed in the first half of the 16th century, illustrates the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It acquired its status as a parish church only after the French Revolution, replacing the former parish church which became private property after its sale.
Archaeological excavations carried out in 1998 revealed vestiges prior to the current building: a vaulted dry stone pipe, a lime oven, traces of bell melting, as well as burials (including children), both inside and outside the building. These discoveries attest to an ancient occupation and a funeral vocation linked to the monastery.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 16 November 1965, the church now belongs to the municipality of Molosmes. Its architecture combines medieval heritage and renaissant influences, reflecting the religious and social transformations of the region. The building, still operating as a parish church, retains protected elements (Cadastre D 1774).
