Origin and history
The church Saint-Marcellin is a religious building located in the hamlet of Saint-Marcellin, on the commune of Châteauroux-les-Alpes, in the Hautes-Alpes department. It is distinguished by a building spanning several centuries, with a bell tower dating from the 12th century, while the rest of the building was erected in the 16th and 17th centuries. This monument thus illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region over a long period.
The church has been protected as historical monuments since 1981. The bell tower, the oldest element, is classified, while the rest of the building (except the bell tower) is inscribed. This dual protection underscores the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and for its historical role in the local community. The property of the church belongs to the commune of Châteauroux-les-Alpes.
The hamlet of Saint Marcellin, where the church stands, is part of a territory marked by a rural and religious history. In medieval and modern times, village or hamlet churches played a central role in community life, serving as places of worship, assembly and sometimes refuge. In the Hautes-Alpes, a mountainous and isolated region, these buildings were often social and spiritual landmarks for local populations, reflecting their attachment to the Christian faith and their local heritage.
