Pierre Lefèvre - Curé de Braye-en-Thiérache Buried in the church, commemorative plaque

Origin and history

The church Saint-Marcellin-et-Saint-Pierre de Braye-en-Thiérache is a religious building located in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. It is distinguished by remarkable interior elements, including two wooden carved panels depicting Christ and a monk in prayer, as well as a black marble plaque commemorating an eighteenth-century priest.

In the left side chapel, an inscription engraved on a black marble plaque indicates: "Cy gist Messire Pierre Lefèvre, cy in front of the parish priest of Nampcelles & Bancigny 5 years old, Then de Bray 50, died on 1 Jan. 1772, aged 80". This detail suggests a long pastoral presence in the region, marked by religious continuity and the importance of local priests.

The two carved panels, located on both sides of the large altar, measure about a metre in height and represent half-relief figures. One shows Christ holding the ball of the world, while the other shows a monk in prayer, holding a discipline. These works, of "good character", illustrate the religious art of the time and the symbolic role of the church in the community.

The building, although little documented about its construction period, remains a testimony to the religious and artistic heritage of the Thierache, an area marked by a strong rural and ecclesiastical tradition. Its furniture and inscriptions offer valuable clues to local life in the 17th and 18th centuries.
