Origin and history
The Saint-Marien de Condéon church, listed as a Historic Monument in 1913, is an atypical building without a bell tower. It consists of a nave divided into three arched spans (15th century), a transept and a square apse, both flanked by massive foothills. The 11th century Romanesque portal lost most of its columns. The building was consecrated between 1075 and 1078, then given to the abbey of Baignes by Bozon, bishop of Saintes, from his dedication.
According to the sources, the church was rebuilt at the end of the 12th century, and then rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries. Major restorations took place between 1701 and 1704, financed by the king and Camille Le Tellier de Louvois, Marquis de Barbezieux. An crypt was discovered under the choir in 1853, followed by the recasting of the vaults between 1854 and 1860. Finally, a sacristy was added in 1902 by architects R. Barbaud and Bauhain.
The church illustrates a hybrid architecture, blending Romanesque (11th century gate) and Gothic (15th century vaults). Its history reflects stylistic evolutions and successive interventions, from its medieval foundation to modern restorations. The presence of imposing foothills and arches underlines its structural and symbolic importance in the region.
