Origin and history
Saint-Marien de Fontenoy Church is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the fourth quarter of the 15th century, it illustrates the architectural style of the Poyaudine churches, characterized by their barlong plan and polygonal bedside. Its stylistic unit and facade adorned with original statuary make it a remarkable example of this local heritage. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1993, it houses a 17th century painted stone altarpiece decorated with trompe l'oeil, as well as vestiges of 16th century stained glass windows.
The commune of Fontenoy, attached to the district of Auxerre, is part of a territory marked by medieval and religious history. The churches of this period served as a spiritual and community centre, reflecting the prosperity of the Burgundy villages. Their architecture, often financed by local lords or parishes, mixed late Gothic influences and regional traditions. The Saint-Marien church, with its preserved furniture, bears witness to this time when sacred art occupied a central place in everyday life.
The classification of the building in 1993 allowed it to be protected and valued, emphasizing its heritage importance. Owned by the commune, it remains a place of worship and a symbol of the rich architectural past of Burgundy. The protected elements include the church itself (cadastre C 52), with its structure and interior decorations, offering an authentic insight into the religious art of the late Middle Ages.
