Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martial de Busserolles is a Catholic building located in the north of the Dordogne, in green Perigord. Built in the 12th century, it was profoundly redesigned in the 15th century, mixing Romanesque and Gothic elements. Of the original building, only the north wall, the north choir and the hemicircular apse remain. The naves, vaulted with warheads and separated by massive pillars, date back to the 15th century, just like the bell tower established above the northern choir.
The northern portal, in the Limousin style, and the sculpted culs-de-lampe adorning the crossovers of warheads testify to the regional artistic influence. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1958, recognizing its heritage value. It is located opposite the town hall, in the centre of the village, and belongs to the municipality of Busserolles.
The architecture of the church reflects the stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the end of this period. The changes of the 15th century, such as the addition of the southern and northern naves, illustrate the liturgical and aesthetic adaptations of the period. Today, it remains a significant testimony of the religious and architectural heritage of the green Perigord.
