Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Ainay-le-Vieil, located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Its current structure reflects construction and reconstruction phases up to the 16th century, with a nave built in the 13th century and a chorus redesigned in the 16th century. The bell tower, whose ground floor dates from the 12th century, saw its upper part rebuilt in the 16th century, illustrating the architectural evolution of the building throughout the centuries.
The seigneurial chapel, added at the end of the 15th century, is associated with the Bigny family, still owner of the nearby castle. It houses an 18th-century golden wooden altarpiece, reflecting the historic and artistic significance of the site. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 1912, protecting its architectural heritage and remarkable elements, such as the painted stained glass windows of the late 15th century and the capitals decorated with hooks and foliage.
The building is characterized by a arched nave on ribs, while the second span of the nave was the primitive choir. The main gate is housed under an imposing bell tower, an emblematic element of the church. The stained glass fragments and sculptural details of the capitals add to the heritage wealth of this monument, which remains a major testimony of religious architecture in Berry.
The Saint-Martin church is now owned by the municipality of Ainay-le-Vieil. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its importance in local and regional heritage, while allowing its preservation for future generations. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as an emblematic building of the Cher, linked to the history of the Bigny family and the medieval and reborn architectural evolution.
