Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Apremont, located in Vendée, was built in 1902 in a neo-Gothic style by architect Ballereau. It replaces an old church of the 15th century, more austere, where Louis XIII kneeled in 1622. This first building, with a typical arrow from the northwest of the Vendée, left only a few remains: a granite door and a 16th century stained glass window.

On the courtyard of the present church, a 14th century hospital cross, 4 meters high, bears witness to the old cemetery. In granite, it represents a pieta and a cross from Malta, and once served as a medium for reading the gospel to parishioners. This cross is before 1542, as confirmed by the roll of Apremont.

The present church, built on the heights of the village, is distinguished by its 25 meters terrace bell tower, decorated with foothills and balustrades. Its bright interior, in the shape of a hall church, houses stained glass windows, including a legacy of the old church. In May 2015, she was robbed.

The site also preserves traces of local religious history, such as the granite door and the 16th century stained glass window, relics of the medieval building. The roll of Apremont of 1542 offers a precious representation of the ancient church, now gone.
