Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Écalles-Alix is a Catholic building located in the commune of Écalles-Alix in the Seine-Maritime region of Normandy. Dated mainly from the 12th century, it underwent major changes in the 18th century, including the reconstruction of its nave. This monument thus illustrates two distinct architectural periods, medieval and modern.
The bell tower, dated precisely from 1160, is the oldest part of the building. He was registered as a historical monument by order of 24 November 1926, thereby recognizing his heritage value. This bell tower houses a bell dating back to 1785, showing additions after the initial construction.
The nave was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century at the initiative of the local lord. This reconstruction reflects the architectural changes and liturgical needs of the time. Today, the church remains a representative example of Norman religious heritage, mixing Romanesque heritage and classical transformations.
The building is owned by the town of Écalles-Alix. Although information on its current accessibility is limited, its historical role as a place of worship and community gathering is well established. Available sources, such as the Mérimée base and departmental archives, confirm its importance in the local heritage landscape.
