Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Hayange, located in the Moselle department, was built between 1883 and 1884 under the German Empire, period of the first annexation. The old church of 1771, which became too small for the growing population, motivated this project. The De Wendel family, masters of local forges, financed the building and asked the architect Rémy Jacquemin to draw inspiration from the Parisian church of the Holy Trinity, a symbol of their attachment to France. The first stone was laid on June 12, 1883, and the church was consecrated in 1884 by Bishop François-Louis Fleck.

The organ, a Dalstein-Haerpfer (Opus 100) installed in 1894, is the largest of Moselle and was also funded by the De Wendel family. The building, of eclectic style, was listed for historical monuments on March 12, 2008. In the 1930s, architect Claude Robbe added a sacristy and two chapels. The stained glass windows, made by the Champigneulle workshops, illustrate the life of Saint Martin and other saints.

Abbé Neumann, who arrived in 1878, was a key player in the project, stressing the need for a larger church. The building, owned by the commune, embodies both Hayange's industrial heritage and the cultural tensions of the time between French and German influences. Parisian architectural references, such as the bell tower inspired by the Trinity, highlight this historical duality.
