Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin d'Heux, located in Larroque-sur-l'Osse in Gers (Occitanie), is a Catholic building whose oldest parts could date back to the 13th or 14th centuries, although its main construction dates mainly from the 15th century. It has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since 1977. The church, built on a terter once occupied by a cemetery, served a nearby hamlet. Today it is disused of its parish function, it remains used for worship and is remarkably maintained.
The interior architecture of the church is characterized by a unique nave of three spans, separated by columns committed to the capitals carved of foliage and busts. The nave, covered with curved panelling, ends with a flat bedside and a rectangular south chapel, accessible by a low arch. The walls and ceilings, entirely painted in the 19th century, present popular motifs: angels surrounding the divine lamb in the choir, starry sky in the nave, and brown crosses on a blue or white background. These paintings, though late, avoid the religious clichés of their time.
The furniture includes a master altar topped by a 17th-century altarpiece, framed with Corinthian columns and decorated with a canvas depicting Christ on the Cross. Two other canvases, appearing in episcopal clothing, flank the altarpiece. The southern chapel houses a small 18th century altarpiece with a Virgin with Child. Outside, the church is integrated into a modest architectural complex, including a covered empan, a bell tower with two bays, and related buildings such as the presbytery and sacristy. The bell tower, accessible by a wooden staircase from the pier, dominates a facade masked by later constructions.
The materials used are mainly cut stones, with rubble and a thicker binder for the bell tower. The roofs, covered with round tiles, present particularities such as flat tiles. The church illustrates rural religious architecture, where simplicity and functionality coexist with naive but expressive decorative elements. Its state of conservation and its regular maintenance make it a valuable testimony to the local heritage.
The Saint Martin d'Heux church reflects the evolution of cultural and architectural practices in rural areas, from the Middle Ages to the additions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its interior decorations, which combine tradition and popular creativity.
