Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin d'Odeillo is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitan region. Dating from the 12th century, it illustrates the typical Romanesque architecture of Roussillon, with elements such as its classified door, bearing witness to its local historical and cultural importance.
The church gate, including its vantals and pentures, was classified as historical monuments in 1910. This ranking highlights the heritage value of this architectural element, characteristic of the Romanesque churches of the region. The building also houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, the object of an annual processional tradition.
Each year, the statue of the Virgin Mary is the subject of two notable processions: the Pujar in the spring (Sunday of the Trinity), where she climbed to the Hermitage to spend the summer there, and the Baixar (or Despedida) on September 8 (Feast of the Nativity of Mary), where she went down to the church. These ceremonies reflect religious and cultural practices rooted in local life for centuries.
The Church of Saint Martin is part of a wider religious and historical landscape, documented by researchers such as Noël Bailbé or Géraldine Mallet, who studied the Romanesque churches of Roussillon. Its architectural features and traditions make it an emblematic monument to the Pyrénées-Orientales, linked to both the region's tangible and intangible heritage.
